St. John's University Careers in Media Forum

Presented by Giana Elenterio

I was recently honored with an invitation to speak at the Careers in Media forum hosted by Envision Education at my alma mater, St. John's University. Envision is an exceptional program that gives high school students the opportunity to explore the industries they're interested in before entering college and choosing a major. These students come from all over the country to participate in a week-long program to work on industry related projects and speak with professionals working within the field.

I was invited to speak about my career path, about the role that I currently play in consumer media and to answer any questions that the students may have had about my field and current profession. Just as I expected, the students did not disappoint. Each student came armed and ready with comments and questions, asking many things I wanted to know at that age as well. I answered every question to the best of my ability, trying my best to recall what it was like to be 18 (and no, I didn't have to try too hard, I'm still a kid at heart).

Not only do I believe that it was a fulfilling and beneficial experience for the students, but it was for me as well. It was so inspiring to retell the journey of my career and how it came to be. I was reminded of how far I've come and how much farther I still wish to go. The thing that I wanted to emphasize the most throughout my presentation was passion. I told the students that the only trait you need to obtain in order to be successful is a passion for what you're doing. I feel extremely lucky to be so passionate about the work that I do every day, and I feel even luckier to have had the opportunity to share that message with our youth.

Special thank you to Envision for putting the event together, to the St. John’s University Alumni Center for referring me as a guest speaker and of course, to all the students, here’s to your futures!
